A Backsplash That Belongs in the Kitchen Plan

Tile, stone and other backsplash finishes look best when the cabinet line, countertop, outlet locations and end points are considered together.

Talk Through Your Kitchen

The decision

Why plan backsplash after the cabinets and counter?

The final cabinet height, countertop thickness and surface edges define where the backsplash begins and ends. Planning that relationship early avoids slivers at the upper cabinets, awkward cuts around switches and an unfinished edge beside a window or doorway.

For a smaller change, compare cabinet refacing with a full kitchen remodel before choosing a scope.

What We Work Through Together

Layout before material

A tile sample cannot show how a pattern turns a corner or lands at a range hood. We consider grout joints, tile size, outlet locations, inside corners and where the finish stops before the first piece goes on the wall.

Practical maintenance

Smooth surfaces and suitable grout can be easier to wipe clean behind a cooktop than heavily textured tile. Natural stone can need different care from glazed ceramic or porcelain. The best choice is one you can live with every day.

Coordinate adjoining work

Changing cabinets, counters or electrical positions after tile is installed often means redoing the backsplash. If your kitchen is being refaced rather than rebuilt, we can discuss how a backsplash update fits around the existing boxes and the selected countertop.

Before the walkthrough

A Useful Starting List

  • Photograph the walls behind the range and sink.
  • Mark every outlet, switch, window and open end.
  • Bring your cabinet and countertop finish choices together.
  • Decide what surface you are comfortable cleaning regularly.
